This week, the Denton County Commissioners Court approved a county-wide burn ban, effective August 25, 2026. The ban will remain in effect until terminated by Commissioners Court or the County Judge determines drought conditions have improved.

 OUTDOOR BURNING

Outdoor burning of combustible materials is prohibited, including wood, lumber, leaves, brush and other materials that could result in a fire. Knowingly or recklessly discarding lighted or burning materials is also prohibited.

 OUTDOOR COOKING

Outdoor cooking and open-flame devices are prohibited unless they meet these requirements:

• Propane or natural gas devices must have a complete enclosure utilized at all times.

• Wood or charcoal devices must have a complete enclosure, with a 5-foot radius clear of vegetation, combustible materials and debris.

 OPEN & ENCLOSED HOTWORK

Welding, cutting and grinding are permitted only under specific safety requirements:

• Open hotwork: Maintain a 30-foot clear area; winds must be 15 mph or less; and relative humidity must be above 25%.

• Enclosed hotwork: A welding enclosure or “welding box” with a fire-retardant cover may be used. Maintain a 20-foot clear area; winds must be 22 mph or less; and relative humidity must be above 20%.

• All hotwork requires a dedicated fire watch person and the ability to call 911. Open hotwork also requires a water-pressure fire extinguisher or pressurized water source per fire watch person.

 VIOLATIONS

In accordance with Government Code 113.4, anyone who knowingly or intentionally violates this order commits a Class C Misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $2,000.  

Please use extra caution during these dry conditions and help reduce the risk of preventable fires in Frisco West and throughout Denton County.
